Trompe l'oeil

Trompe l'oeil in French means to 'deceive the eye'.  It is an art technique involving extremely realistic imagery in order to create the optical illusion that the depicted objects appear in three dimensions. This technique was originally started in the Baroque period and instances from Greek and Roman times are known. A typical trompe-l'œil mural might depict a window, door, or hallway, intended to suggest a larger room.

This technique is still being used in modern day in art, apparel and home decor.  In Europe, artists are painting large canvases to make it look like old historical buildings.

Today, designers are fooling the eye with printing techniques.  Many are using photo real printing techniques to create looks that give a modern take on tromp l’oeil. In handbags, designers are creating printed versions of another handbag on a tote to make it look like another bag.

In apparel and home décor, printed knits and snakeskins are becoming trendy.  It is a cool way to get a high-end look for less. In flooring, mats are being printed to create beautiful tile work and stones.  This effect definitely fools your eye to create a unique piece for your home.

  1. Nice read, I just passed this onto a friend who was doing a little research on that. And he actually bought me lunch as I found it for him smile So let me rephrase that: Thanks for lunch!
